Man of Steel soared to the number one position at the US box office this weekend.
The Superman feature starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams earned over $125 million in its debut, which broke the record best opening in June. The Warner Bros. blockbuster directed by Zack Snyder and produced by The Dark Night series filmmaker Christopher Nolan cost $225 million to make. Man of Steel follows a young nomadic Superman, portrayed by Henry, who must confront his secret alien heritage when members of his extraterrestrial race visit Earth. The film was shown in 4,200 theatres and averaged just under $27,000 at each establishment.
This Is the End came in second with gross profits of $32.8 million. The comedy directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen features a number of A-list talent, including Emma Watson, Jonah Hill and James Franco. This Is the End takes place at James Franco’s house during a party. When the apocalypse hits many celebrities must face the end of the world together. The hilarious film broke even in its debut, as the film’s production budget was $32 million.
Now You See Me remains a contender with sales totalling $10.3 million after reaching theatres three weeks ago. The thriller stars Isla Fisher, Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson. Now You See Me follows an Interpol and FBI agent on their quest to capture illusionists who share their heist monies with members of the audience attending their magic performances. It has finally reached profitability, as it has earned $80 million since its debut and the film cost $75 million to create.
