Hurricane Sandy Latest News

Hurricane Sandy  Latest News

While stirring the sand storm on the east coast, here is a break in the storm and its consequences:

Pressure: the pressure of the storm is falling, which means getting stronger. According to CBS News hurricane consultant David Bernard, the pressure is now on 943 millibars, breaking the record for lowest pressure observed north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina record previously held by The Long Island Express, a massive hurricane struck New York in 1938.

Although Sandy is technically a Category 1 storm, the current levels of pressure are what you usually see in a category 3 or 4. But because of the storm of the energy is distributed over a large area, the wind did not reach the level of a major hurricane.

Surge: Among the many dangers posed by the storm surge of sand is probably the most important. The floods have already been observed in parts of Maryland and southern New Jersey, and water levels rose in Manhattan.

Peak current comes just before landfall - around 8 or 9 am Monday. This coincides with the high tide, adding more potential effects.
Forecasters warned that the city of New York and Long Island could be dangerous in the northeast edge of the storm and are the first victims of the storm - a wall of sea water 11 meters high which could flood the south Manhattan, the subways and flood crippling the network of power lines and communication are vital to the country's financial center.
Location: The Category 1 hurricane was moving north-northwest at 18 km / h, becoming northwest. At 11:00 am, when the storm was about 260 miles south-southeast of New York. Hurricane force winds extend up to 175 miles from the center of the storm, with winds of tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 485 miles.
Sandy should make landfall near Atlantic City, NJ

Winds of building: sustained winds have increased to 90 mph, with gusts over 100 mph observed along the coast.

Power outages: More than 62,000 people are without power across several states on the East Coast. The authorities have warned that response teams can be delayed due to high winds.
Travel: Approximately 10,000 flights were canceled Monday and Tuesday, almost all related to the storm, according Flight Aware. With major companies canceled all flights at airports three new New York area, a domino effect of delays are expected in the United States and around the world.
Following the closure of the metro and train to New York, the authorities announced that two major tunnels in Manhattan and Brooklyn Battery Netherlands, closed 14 hours

Evacuations: Hundreds of thousands of people are under orders to evacuate coastal areas, including 375,000 in New York. In a press conference in mid-morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned that time is running out for those forced to evacuate, saying that people "should have".

The state of emergency: President Barack Obama declared an emergency in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing the work of federal aid to begin well before hour. He promised that the government "great response and respond quickly" after the storm.

"My message to governors and mayors is all it takes, we're here, and we will reduce red tape," said Obama. "We will not end up with a lot of rules."

Campaigns concerned Sandy interrupted events planned for the two presidential campaigns just over a week before election day.

Virginia, one of the most competitive states, election officials have reduced the requirements for voting for those affected by the storm. Three other key states, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Ohio, were at the disposal of sand. Early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and Washington, DC, while reliably Democratic.

Not only the coast: the confluence of weather conditions should also bring heavy snow in inland areas.
Parts of West Virginia could see up to three feet of snow.

HMS Bounty: A three-masted ship that looked straight out of a century earlier, was caught in the fury of the storm of sand and began taking on water, forcing the crew boats rescue in rough seas off the coast of North Carolina. The Coast Guard rescued 14 people by helicopter Monday, but two people are missing.

The HMS Bounty 180 feet, which was played in Hollywood movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" had left Connecticut last week on the way to Florida.
