Thomas Kubb’s (Thomas Mann) 17th birthday, and for his present, he got the mini-van has mum dropped him off to school in, but on the up side a couple of days parent free is on the cards. But this is going to be no quiet child time, Thom’s best friend Costa (Oliver Cooper), and fellow sidekick JB (Jonathan Daniel Brown) have made it their mission to give Thomas the best party of life, and escalate their standing at school to that of heroes. Using every resource they can to ensure the party really kicks off, they turn to Craigs List, Facebook, and the school notice board to get the word out. They also score enough drugs to keep everyone happy, and recruit a garden gnome in the process. As the party goes into full swing, the neighbours kick off, the police move in, then a man moves in with a flamethrower torching everything in sight. This is one birthday party these kids are not going to forget.
Project X takes the now tried and tested handheld camera footage approach, we see the movies entire events through the camera lens. Now found footage approach this time, like so many other movies, this film stays very much in the hands of its filmmakers. The choice to film the movie this way is a good one; it creates a really REAL feeling, and at the same time captures the intense, varied, and fun party lifestyle.
The story is pieced together really nicely; the story runs in a very cohesive manner, despite the high amount of activity. Each of the key characters goes on their own very different journey, and by the time the movie reaches its conclusion, you truly feel as if you know the characters portrayed in the picture.
Watching the movie, you cannot help but feel like you stepped into a party, there is a real hands on mentality. There are some really good snapshot sequences, much like you get when you’ve been out and become subjected to too much alcohol, you don’t see everything, but certain things you see become engrained in your brain.
