Annie and Capitalism

Annie and Capitalism

I thought that the Annie film was appropriate for the holidays because it deals with poor people and how one may always hope to be well off and can succeed but underneath all that there was a subtext about how Annie in her own way made sure that her step-father appreciated his choice His choice was to adopt a girl even though he had wanted a boy and Annie let him know that she was grateful even just to have had a taste of the good life.

Now Annie wasn’t at odds with capitalism per se but one got the feeling that she didn’t care for how her host regarded girls or how he treated everything as though only money mattered. At one point there was a mention that money cannot buy the happiness that one acquired when taking care of a child and this came through in an intimate scene. The father played by Albert Finney, showed his appreciation of Annie he could not have had had he not been allowed to put her to sleep. That and other events opened up his eyes at the prospect of making his adoption real.

The story with her dad to be began with a visit to this rich tycoon’s residence. Once he sees that Annie has class word went out to the former lover of the landlady that wanted to claim Annie as his long lost daughter. If he could there would be an award and Carol Burnett playing the evil house-lady was in on the take. She didn’t care for little orphan girls let alone Annie who was much more adventurous and self-assured than the rest. The scheme fell through, the former lover was exposed and Annie was allowed to stay with her adoptive parent , the rich man who originally only wanted to host a male orphan.
